All Loktak Lake Area Fishermen Union – Manipur
Dr. Madhuri Nanda Director-South Asia, Rainforest Alliance
The ALL LOKTAK LAKE AREA FISHERMEN UNION (ALLAFUM) is a dedicated organisation working tirelessly to protect and preserve the delicate ecosystem of Loktak Lake in Manipur, India. This vital lake, a lifeline for over 300,000 people, is renowned for its rich biodiversity, including the endangered Brow-Antlered Deer.
For generations, the Meitei fishermen of Loktak Lake have relied on traditional fishing practices to sustain their livelihoods and cultural heritage. However, in recent years, these communities have faced numerous challenges, including the devastating 2011 eviction that displaced thousands of fishermen, leaving them without homes and voting rights.
In response to these challenges, ALLAFUM, in partnership with the People Resources Development Association, has emerged as a beacon of hope. The union tirelessly advocates for the rights and welfare of the displaced fishermen, working to restore their livelihoods and dignity.
Recognising the importance of education, ALLAFUM has established the Loktak Elementary Floating School in the Champu Khangpok floating village. This innovative school provides quality education to the children of fishermen, empowering them to become future leaders in the conservation of Loktak Lake. ALLAFUM is actively involved in various conservation initiatives to safeguard the delicate ecosystem of Loktak Lake. The union campaigns against overfishing, the use of destructive fishing methods like motorboats, and works to restore the lake’s wetlands. By promoting sustainable fishing practices and raising awareness about the importance of environmental conservation, ALLAFUM is striving to ensure a healthy and prosperous future for both the lake and its communities.
