One of the few people in the world who continue to live in harmony with nature, Hong Village Community’s’ methods of sustainable farming and social forestry is without a parallel anywhere in this world. Settled in Ziro, one of the most beautiful Himalayan valleys in India, the Village Community remains proud of their traditional history while maintaining a balance with the changing world. Built on flat lands, the farms where the community practice wet rice cultivation along with pisciculture, is an epitome of efficiency.

The Ghora Aabhe Society consists of reformed hunters and conservationists living in and around Pakke Tiger Reserve, who have become the guardians of wildlife in this landscape. Situated in the state of Arunachal Pradesh, members of the society are known for carrying out ground-level conservation work with communities and governing agencies towards the awareness and conservation of biodiversity. Two of the key people from the society are Tana Tapi and Takum Nabum.

Local communities that inhabit villages around Protected Areas are one of the foremost stakeholders for conserving, due to their dependence on it. Their involvement in its conservation can help both nature and community to grow as one. The villagers of Kharman and Kyalegteng in Arunachal Pradesh were inspired by the idea of Community Conserved Area and approached Tata Trusts and WWF – India for technical and nancial support to demarcate 85 km² of unclassed State Forest land as the Pangchen Lakhar Community Conserved Area (PLACCA).

Tongam Rina is currently the Associate Editor of The Arunachal Times and is known for her bold articles on current aairs in Northeast India. She was near-fatally shot, in front of her oce in 2012 for writing on sensitive issues. In the past, Tongam and her sta has received numerous threats for her writing against NSCN(IM), corruption and super-hydro dams of Arunachal Pradesh.
