The Eastern Himalayan Naturenomics™ School had organised a one-day programme for the students and the faculty members, which was set along the initiatives of the Earth Day Network, celebrating 49 years of the ‘Earth Day’.

The programme began with an introduction to the Eastern Himalayan Botanic Ark, followed by a special session that lasted for 1.5 hours. Participants were informed about the history of Earth Day, theme of Earth Day 2019 and how one small efforts at individual level makes a difference. The special session was on municipal waste management, which was framed in line with the syllabus for ‘Environmental Studies’. To create a wider impact on the students, videos on creating art using disposed plastic material, and constructing a composting bin at home were played as well. A tour of the botanic trail – conversations with nature was guided by the team of the Botanic Ark and the students were shown the waste management units, vermi-compost pit, leaf-compost and pit-compost units on the campus. The programme concluded with distribution of participatory certificates.

Impacts of the event:

  • Participants were informed about the environmental, health as well as economic effects of improper waste disposal

  • The alternatives for plastic dependency and creative art from used plastic products may serve as potential ideas for business start-ups
