Universal Basic Income Seminar
A seminar on Universal Basic Income was held on the 6th of October 2018, by Balipara Foundation in collaboration with Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Guwahati. The objective of the seminar was to bring consultants, experts and students from different backgrounds debating, suggesting and creating dialogue on ‘Basic Income’ and its relevance in India.
The panel constituted of Saurav Malhotra and Rhea Hussain from Balipara Foundation, Pijush Dutta (WWF), Rajdeep Singha and Debdulal Saha from TISS-G, Rael Sarmeen from UNCTAD, Pranjal Saxena from CML Tata Trusts, Raj Phukan from Green Guard Nature Organization and the students of TISS-G.
The consensus agreement was that India as it is today is in dire need of basic education and healthcare ‘for all’ programs to ensure a standard of social mobility before embarking on the landmark project of UBI and to ensure that its diverse population is indeed ready for the UBI revolution. We intend to organize discussion groups on UBI across the country and internationally to learn and debate towards the development of a pilot Rural Futures – Universal Basic Income program.
