Human Elephant Conflict Mitigation in Hattigor TE, Udalguri Dist

The Udalguri District is among the worst effected Human-Elephant Conflict Zones in the North-Eastern Region of India. Elephants come into conflict with human communities that are either settled between or beside Elephant Habitats. In the case of Hattigor TE and adjoining areas it is a matter of being located beside Elephant Habitats and also of being the case of Elephant Populations diverting from their natural direction of migration and conducting raids in search of “food”. When one talks about Elephant Conservation, the two things that first come to mind are Migratory Corridor Connectivity and Human-Elephant Conflict Resolution. These two issues, along with Forest Protection, are identified here and communicated as follows:

The Project will focus on the following to identify and implement Conflict Mitigation Measures through:

  • Identifying Land Use Patterns through Geo-referencing and site data collection
  • Documenting and Analyising Elephant Behavior and Ecology in HEC Situations & Locations
  • Reviewing current Mitigation Measures used in HEC
  • Recording, Reporting, and Analysis of Incident Situations
  • Quantifying Livelihood Impacts
  • Developing Compensation Mechanisms
